Prayer Guide

“Devote yourselves to prayer.” Colossians 4:2

“For my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.” Isaiah 56:7

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17

  • The discipline of prayer in our lives is essential to having a healthy spiritual life. As Christians, we must seek to grow in prayer. Meaning, as time passes we must be making every effort to pray for longer periods of time, with greater frequency, and to deeper degrees of intimacy with God. Having only a superficial prayer life can be detrimental to the Christian.

  • Jesus prayed in the morning, if possible, we should too. “Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray.” Mark

  • Let your goal be to pray for an hour! This will take consistent effort. There are seventeen topics listed here, if you spend four minutes praying for each one you will spend just over one hour in prayer. Feel free to spend more time on important issues and add topics as they come to mind.

  • When praying for others: intercede for them, appeal to the Lord in their behalf. Pray diligently for any needs that come to mind. One of the most important prayers we can pray for others is that God would keep them from temptation, Jesus taught us to pray for ourselves and others this way.

  • Consider keeping a Prayer Journal, this will help with keeping track of all the times God answers your prayers!

  • Many people have found it helpful to make a list of people to pray for. Try to pray specifically for their needs as much as you can.

  • When you’re starting to feel like you’ve prayed as long as you can, wait just a few more moments. It’s important that we learn how to sit and wait on the Lord.

  • Make a conscious effort to not ramble and continuously repeat yourself. Remember that when we’re talking to God we’re talking to our dearest most trusted Friend. Speak to Him in a way that respects that fact that He is a person; He is listening and cares about what you are saying. Many false religions teach their followers to repeat phrases over and over, this makes prayer a mindless, impersonal practice.  Jesus said, “When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again.” (Mat

  • Be aware of the schemes of the Devil, he will try to distract you to prevent you from focusing on prayer. The flesh is also a source of distraction, we must learn to subject our bodies to the will of our spirit. Many of us have allowed hunger, stress, anxiety, fatigue, and boredom to prevent us from having diligent prayer lives; this is a very serious issue, we have to value our spiritual health more than our physical needs and desires.

  • When you don’t know what to say, speak in tongues! When we speak in tongues the Holy Spirit speaks through us, He edifies us and strengthens us through this miraculous gift. It is fulfilling and awe inspiring to note that God is in us, and praying through us. “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”

Romans 8:26-27 “So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding.” 1 Corinthians 14:15

Read Scripture

Reading a chapter of the Bible in the beginning of your prayer time is a great way to focus your attention on Him. If you want to be spiritually minded, start with being scripturally minded! Be consistent in this and read with purpose, try to read through the bible one chapter at a time. You’ll be surprised how often the daily chapter has a word specifically for you and what you’re going through.

Try praying through a psalm, read it and pray it to God in your own words. This is a good way to learn to pray. Take time to meditate on the scriptures you’ve read or other texts that come to mind, ask God to give you understanding as you read. Psalm 9, 23, 55, 86, 150.

“I treasure your word in my heart.” Psalm 119:11

Praise and Worship

Before  you ask anything from Him, acknowledge God for all the good things He has already done. Praise is singing about God and His mighty works, and worship is singing directly to God. Try writing your own songs with these ideas in mind, or sing some of your favorite choruses. Some examples of praise and worship are, “Redeemed,” “Revelation Song,” “How Great is Our God,” and “Indescribable.”

“Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name.” Psalm 100:4

Pray for God to grant you the Gifts of the Spirit.

This is also a time for confessing your sins to God. Consider your recent attitudes, thoughts, words, and actions, has God convicted you of any of these things? Confess your sins to Him and humbly ask for His forgiveness and cleansing. Ask the Spirit for power and dominion in your life.

“If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  I John 1:9

“Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6–7
